 The Julie Felix Memorial Maternity Unit 

Herona Hospital proudly opened its new maternity unit, in memory of folk singer Julie Felix who was an avid supporter of IMET2000 and women's rights. 35 babies were born in the first 4 weeks of the unit opening, 12 of which were C-sections. All mothers and babies are doing well.

About the new Maternity Unit

Maternity unit

As part of efforts to reduce mortality and morbidity rates of infants and mothers who were dying in big numbers due to obstetric complications, Herona decided to set a well-equipped labour suite this has patient monitors a well designed gynaecological bed, emergency drugs including magnesium sulphate used in the management of hypertensive related hysterical emergencies.

Neonatal department

Neonatal Care Unit (NCU)

This unit caters for newborns up to 6 days of age. It comprises of 2 infant radiant warmers, an incubator, 3phototherapy units and 6 baby coats. It has most of the basic equipment, and devices needed for emergency neonatal resuscitation and care services.

The unit handles the most common early neonatal medical conditions like Birth Asphyxia, Birth Trauma, Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Neonatal Tetanus, Extreme prematurity, Neonatal septicaemia, etc.

It also offers specialist referral advise and recommendations for those newborns with complicated medical and surgical conditions to other tertiary centres within the country.

It is manned by a dedicated team of nurses, who have been oriented & trained in neonatal care and resuscitation. They work with the guidance of the medical officers and a paediatrician, who is the overall team leader, daily. On average, it handles about 30 in-patients per month.

Antenatal Clinic (General):

This is managed by qualified Midwives and a Medical Officer whom mothers are referred in case of further management/opinion. It operates Monday to Friday (8:30 – 4:00 p.m.) and Saturday (8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.). Mothers are given a free choice to switch from general and private services.

 

Antenatal Clinic (Private):

This runs on Thursday (8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) and it is managed by a Gynaecologist together with the Midwives. This clinic is also open for general clients who require specialized services of an Obstetrician but must be referred by the Medical Officer.

 

Antenatal Classes:

These happen every  Friday, in these classes, a good number of topics are handled, mothers don’t have to pay for this service. It is spearheaded by the clinical team attached to the MCH department. These sessions are very beneficial to mothers because it helps to answer any questions helping allay any anxieties caused by propaganda.
